I thought these pictures were interesting; they show exactly what causes the "arch over the loin".

Even though the spine is straight in that area, the spinal processes have different heights, thus causing "the arch". It's most noticable at the beginning of the arch (just after the T-L juncture).

I thought I'd add one more photo so that people can see what the arch looks like "from the outside":

More racing news...

(That I forgot to write yesterday)

On the 20th, Derby ran in her first oval race since her toe was amputated. She won the meet, undefeated! Congratulations to Lorna on an incredibly successful rehab!

For anyone who is faced with an amputation and subsequent rehab, this meet was 13 weeks post-injury (12.5 weeks post-surgery). She also ran untaped with no negative effect on her foot.

Also, on the 27th, Yankee ran in the Bundessiegerrennen in Oberhausen. Despite a dreadful break, Yankee was able to pass most of the field (on the outside!) to finish in second place behind his cousin (a Baby Jaymes son), Indiana Jones of Good Family. Third place went to another cousin, Iron Heart of Good Family.

Jetzt ist Aragon CWA-Welperennsieger 2004! In seiner Renne war er unschlagbar. Lorna und ich sind sehr stolz...

What a busy month it's been!

Shortly after my last entry, RCRA helped NCWFA out with their NAWRA/NOTRA race meets in Wheatland. Things went very well. Dayton ran on Sunday and placed third behind Diablo and newcomer Alcaeus. Alcaeus is still a youngster but is showing a lot of skill and speed on the oval...I think he'll definitely be one of the top whippets in the coming year or two. He's also fun to watch off the track; he looks like he's got a great sense of humour.

Xantana, Dunja's puppy, now has a call name. At home, she is now known as Carla. I still call her by the nickname hung on her by her breeder (which I'm not allowed to repeat in public but some of you know it...LOL) but am getting used to calling her Carla as well.

We had a bit of a scare with Dayton earlier in June. He had some sort of GI distress and, coupled with very high temperatures, ended up severely dehydrated and not at all healthy. The vet was awesome and, rather than admit him overnight, pumped as much sub-q fluids into him as she could (400cc! yikes!) and let him come home. Between that, the anti-nausea drugs, the two different antibiotics, and the ulcer meds, he was back to his old self with five days or so. Needless to say, he did not race at our June meet!

Just to make sure that he didn't have a bowel obstruction, Dayton had some pictures taken of his insides so I also got to try out the vet's new digital imaging system, eFilm. Of course, I went down to the office a few days later and had them burn the xrays onto a CD for me.

Our meets on the 19th & 20th were successful. It was our first meet with our new equipment: boxes and lure machine. Thanks to Pat, our paddock master, things went very smoothly and efficiently. We had a number of new folk come out and either watch with their puppies or run their dogs...I sure hope they enjoyed themselves. I know we liked having them there!

On Saturday at the races, I managed to qualify Rogie for racing. (Yippee!) That meant that I could take him up to Abbotsford the following week to visit with Lorna and to run in the CWA National meet.

Jean and I left on the 23rd and arrived in Abbotsford on the afternoon of the 24th. Lorna came over to Noni's to collect us as we would be staying at her place. This gave her some time to spend with Rogie and she even managed to work in 20 minutes or so of show training. I thought this was wonderful because it meant that she could handle him in the fun match the next day!

Rogie behaved well in the ring and won his class (entry of 2). Our real goal had just been to have him behave when someone other than me handled him; he performed admirably! (Full match results are here.)

The national meet the next day was very well run and relaxing (for us at any rate...I'm sure Linda and Janet were far from relaxed!). What a treat not to have to be the race secretary! Lorna and I ran Rogie, helped Jean with her dogs, and foul judged for the rest of the races. I have to say it was a fun day at the races.

The puppy races were great experience for all three of the puppies running. Linda and Janet rotated the pups through the boxes so they got experience running out of different holes. Also, in each race, a different pup broke on top; this meant that every pup had both the experience of breaking first *and* of having to work through traffic.

Jean's bitch, Miss Shelby, was possessed and ran incredibly well, winning the meet over the incumbent (also belonging to Jean), Coalby! Congratulations to Jean...both girls ran very, very well.

Full race results for Saturday are here and here for Sunday.

I'm afraid I'm nattering on and on here. The salmon barbecue on Saturday night was phenomenal. I haven't had salmon cooked like that since I lived on the Island and used to visit All Sooke Days! Yum!!!

All in all, it was a fun weekend and we accomplished our goals with Rogie: introduce him to travelling, have him spend some time with Lorna, more experience on the track, and a beginning to his training in the ring.

Finally, it's official and I can say something about it!

Dunja has expanded her "pack" by one...Xantana van de Spaarnemeute

This petite clone of Yankee still doesn't have a call name but I'm sure one will make itself known eventually. From the looks of things, Xantana has her dad's personality:

I've just seen a new picture of Bennet (Bennet aus dem Gnomenhain), Tighe's grandson who lives in Finland.

Here he is at 7 months old. Is he a handsome boy or what?

In all the goings on around here lately, I've forgotten some of the best news I've heard in a while...

Derby attended race practice last weekend and put in two runs. Her foot and toe (or, what's left of her toe) held up fine. No redness, no swelling, no lameness, no nothing.

Woo-hoo!!
